Disney Parks is always looking for ways to take what they do and do it even better. In the coming months they’ll be
testing and rolling out a collection of tools at the Walt Disney World® Resort called MyMagic+ that will give You
more opportunities to customize and personalize your entire visit.
The goal of MyMagic+ is to make it easier for You to create the Disney experience you’ve been dreaming of —
from securing a window to visit a favorite attraction in advance … to a digital guide that simplifies how you move
through the Walt Disney World® Resort hotels and Theme Parks … to the touch of a MagicBand that seamlessly
connects all your plans — allowing you to enjoy each moment like never before.
Wendy and I had the chance to test the new MyMagic+ experience in Oct while we attended the OSSN Travel Agent Forum at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort! I was impressed (mostly) with the new system!
For starters – when you are registered with the ‘mydisneyexperience’ website – you open up the doors to completely customize your entire vacation! If you are a ‘planner’ as I am – this is H E A V E N!! I was able to pre-select my fast passes (3 for each day) based on what park I wanted to be in (strategically decided based on park hours). I planned dining and added in my ‘must-do’s (parades, characters and more)!
The free wi-fi in the rooms and in the parks allowed me to use my iPAD without any roaming fees (disclaimer: please speak with your cellular provider if you are using an iphone or android phone to ensure you are not using data and incurring atrocious roaming fees! Make sure your device is working on wi-fi) It was annoying that my device would not stay connected to wi-fi, however, I managed to make it work. When I couldn’t get it connected, I simply went to the information booth and tapped my bracelet to find my itinerary for the afternoon!
Back to the planning….
I planned my fast passes from the comfort of my recliner (without having to RUN to Toy Story Midway Mania first thing in the morning to make sure I got a FP!) based on the parks I would be visiting that day! I delightfully discovered that you can now book a FP to extra events such as parades, Fantasmic, Character greetings and more! This lady does NOT like to wait in line…especially with an ADHD Boy and his little sister the Drama Queen!
Next – I customized my Magic Bands! I chose the colour and added names! Simple enough!
Then – on to Dining! Again – keeping in mind park hours – I chose all my dining and linked it to my account!
I completed my online checkin, assigned a PIN to my Magic Band for charging abilities. The Magic dust settled and I awaited my trip to Disney knowing everything was all planned out!
Because this MyMagic+ was so new and exciting for us…we couldn’t wait to check out how they worked! I fired up the iPad and confirmed the order of our FPs and we headed to Epcot! We still went through the same ‘ole bag check stations and headed to the
turnstiles What?? No Turnstiles….
Now…you simply tap your Magic Band to the Mickey symbol and press your finger on the glass! (Note: if you have freshly applied sunscreen – the scanner may not read your finger print! Ensure the sunscreen is well rubbed in when you get to this ‘gate’).
Now that we were in…using your FP was much in the same manner! You simply go through the FP que – tap your Magic Band to the Mickey post – if it turns green you are good to go! If it turns Blue – you are too early or too late. The cast member will let you know either way. Depending on the line up – they will use their discretion whether or not to let you proceed. (We experienced both – we had a Cast Member let us in after we were late, another FP Cast Member turned us away. It really depended on how popular – and how long the Standby line was)
For Dining – once our meal was complete, our server brought over this new machine (looks like a debit machine) that we simply tapped our Magic Band to the Mickey symbol and keyed in a PIN. A receipt printed and we were good to go!
Back at our room, the Magic Band was our room key as well. I found it a bit awkward trying to line up the band with the sensor on the door. By the second day, I had attached my band to my purse and just lifted it up to tap where I needed.
I do have to add – the system has not been perfected yet. I still carried my Key to the World Card everywhere and I did have to use it on occasion when my Magic Band didn’t want to work.
All in all… I LOVE the new MyMagic+ Experience. It allows guests like me to manage every detail of their vacation right down to their path through the parks! For those who like to ‘wing it’ – you can still do so as well! It is the best of both worlds :D I can’t wait to get back there and test it again!!!
